EWURA warns against unlicensed fuel dealers

ILEMELA: EWURA has warned members of the public against buying fuel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and other regulated products from unlicensed dealers, saying the practice endangers lives, property and the environment.
Speaking during the Nanenane exhibitions in Ilemela Municipality yesterday, EWURA Lake Zone Manager Nyirabu Musira urged consumers to verify whether service providers possess valid licences before engaging them.
“It is important for consumers to verify whether service providers possess valid EWURA licences before engaging them,” Mr Musira said. He said some traders involved in the illegal sale of fuel were violating laws governing the petroleum business and exposing wananchi to fire outbreaks and environmental pollution.
Mr Musira also advised people constructing houses to hire electricians licensed by EWURA in order to avoid accidents caused by substandard electrical installations.
“We appeal to citizens purchasing petroleum products, including LPG for domestic use, to ensure that they buy from traders licensed by EWURA,” he said.

According to him, individuals operating businesses regulated by EWURA without licences are violating the law and may face fines ranging from 3 million/- to 20 million/-. He said licensed electrical installation technicians are required to display their licences at workplaces to enable customers to verify their credentials.
“When consumers buy gas cylinders from unlicensed dealers, they often find that essential equipment, such as weighing scales, is missing. Licensed dealers comply with all the required procedures,” he said.
Mr Musira added that EWURA has continued to educate the public on laws governing the petroleum sector, the dangers associated with illegal fuel sales and the procedures for importing, storing, distributing and refilling domestic cooking gas.
He also encouraged the use of clean cooking energy, saying it is safer for human health and helps reduce environmental degradation.
