Mwinyi stresses moral values among children
ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has stressed the importance of madrasa institutions in providing quality religious education while nurturing children’s understanding, moral values and strong foundations in Islamic teachings.
He made the remarks on Friday after joining Muslim worshippers for Friday prayers at Al-Aqswaa Mosque in Kiboje, Central District, South Unguja Region.
President Mwinyi said madrasa education plays an important role in shaping children academically, spiritually and morally, stressing that learners should not only be taught to read religious texts but also guided to understand their meaning and interpretation.
“Madrasa have a critical responsibility to instil discipline, good conduct and proper upbringing, which will help children develop a strong religious foundation and contribute to building a morally upright society,” he said.
He also emphasised the need for continuous training and support for madrasa teachers to enhance their ability to deliver lessons effectively and help learners develop a deeper understanding of Islamic teachings.
The President called on the religious leaders, parents and the wider community to work together to strengthen madrasa education and address challenges facing the institutions.
Meanwhile, President Mwinyi officially inaugurated Fatma Madrasa in Kiboje Mkwajuni, expressing optimism that the institution would play a significant role in educating and nurturing children.
He commended religious leaders, parents, members of the Muslim community and the donor for their collective efforts in constructing the madrasa, urging them to remain united in promoting Islamic education and moral values in society.

One of the madrasa teachers, Ustadh Ibrahim Omar, thanked the donors and President Mwinyi for supporting the construction of the institution, saying the new facility had provided a conducive learning environment for children.
“We are happy to work in a conducive learning environment for our children,” he said.
