Govt pledges stronger support for private sector in agriculture

ARUSHA: THE government has stressed commitment to creating a conducive environment for agriculture, livestock and fisheries, recognising the private sector as a key driver of economic growth and youth employment.

Moshi District Commissioner Godfrey Mzava made the remarks yesterday while officiating the opening of the livestock parade and exhibition during the 32nd Nanenane Exhibition for the Northern Zone at the Themi Grounds in Njiro, Arusha. Mr Mzava said agriculture, livestock and fisheries remain the backbone of Tanzania’s economy and are central to improving the livelihoods of citizens.

“I would like to reiterate the importance of identifying market demand before production so that farmers and livestock keepers can produce according to market needs and secure reliable markets for their products,” he said.

Addressing private sector stakeholders, he assured them of the government’s continued support.

“To the private sector, I wish to assure you that you are valued partners. The government recognises your contribution to economic growth and job creation and will continue providing a conducive environment for your business activities,” he said.

Speaking on this year’s Nanenane theme, ‘Know the Market, Increase Productivity, Implement Vision 2050,’ Mr Mzava said achieving the objectives begins with identifying market demand before production and adopting quality seeds together with improved crop and livestock management practices.

He noted that agriculture and livestock remain the dominant economic sectors in Arusha, Manyara and Kilimanjaro regions. Mr Mzava added that the livestock parade, introduced in 2015, was established to encourage healthy competition among livestock keepers, promote best husbandry practices and improve productivity.

According to him, the initiative has contributed significantly to increased livestock production, improved animal breeds and higherquality livestock products.

Earlier, speaking on behalf of the Chairperson of the Livestock Parade Organising Committee, Mr Emmanuel Lema said the event also serves as a platform to connect livestock keepers with buyers and markets for livestock and livestock products. He said animals on display include beef and dairy cattle, meat and dairy goats, as well as sheep.
