Tanzania, Uganda sign MoU to bolster cooperation in energy sector

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA ania and Uganda have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the energy sector, a move expected to position Tanga Region as a major energy hub for the East African region.

The agreement was signed at the State House in Dar es Salaam today, August 6, 2026, in the presence of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

Tanzania was represented by the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, while Uganda was represented by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Dr Monica Musanza.

Bahrain-based Vitol Bahrain E.C., the project’s investor, also participated in the signing ceremony.

The agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation in the energy sector by promoting investment, improving energy storage and distribution infrastructure, and enhancing cross-border energy trade.

The project is also expected to position Tanga as a strategic gateway for the energy business, serving Tanzania, Uganda and other East African countries, while supporting regional economic integration and long-term energy security.
