New dispensary eases healthcare access
BARIADI: RESIDENTS of Bipyayi Sub-Village in Nyangokolwa Ward, Bariadi Town Council, will no longer travel 10 kilometres to access healthcare following the completion of a new dispensary valued at more than 100m/-.
The facility, which is expected to serve about 3,500 residents, will particularly ease access to healthcare for pregnant women and mothers attending reproductive and child health clinics.
The dispensary was officially inaugurated yesterday during the 2026 Uhuru Torch Race. The government has equipped the facility with modern medical equipment and deployed health workers to ensure services begin immediately.
Presenting the project report during the inauguration ceremony, the Officer in Charge of the dispensary, Mr Habab Habab, said all essential medical equipment has already been delivered and the facility is ready to start providing services.
He said the community contributed 19.4m/- towards construction, while the central government provided 50m/- and Bariadi Town Council contributed another 50m/- from its own revenue.
“The construction of this dispensary was initiated by the community after residents experienced serious challenges travelling to Nyangokolwa Dispensary for healthcare services. Today the project has been completed, and we sincerely thank the government for making it possible,” he said.
A resident, Ms Grace Samwel, said people previously spent more than three hours travelling to and from Nyangokolwa Dispensary to receive treatment. She said the long journey posed serious risks to pregnant women, some of whom went into labour on the way and gave birth before reaching the health facility.
“We are very grateful to have this dispensary. We have struggled for a long time. Mothers will no longer have to travel long distances to deliver, take their children for clinic services or access other essential healthcare,” she said.

Speaking during the inauguration, the National Leader of the 2026 Uhuru Torch Race, Mr Wazo Mwang’onda, commended the quality of the project and the modern medical equipment installed at the facility.
He said some of the equipment was previously available only at district and regional referral hospitals and a few health centres, adding that it would significantly improve healthcare services in the area.
“We sincerely thank President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for providing the funds that have enabled people in this area to access quality healthcare services. We have seen modern medical equipment, and the Uhuru Torch is impressed that this project has been implemented according to the required standards,” Mr Mwang’onda said.
