Medinova launches physiotherapy services for specialist healthcare and quality medical services

DAR ES SALAAM: MEDINOVA Specialized Polyclinic has officially launched Physiotherapy services as part of its strategy to expand specialist healthcare and improve access to quality medical services in Tanzania.

The launch forms part of the hospital’s broader expansion plan, which also includes the establishment of operating theatres, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and enhanced emergency services to meet the growing healthcare needs of the population.

Speaking during the launch ceremony in Dar es Salaam on  July 30, 2026 , Medical Director of Medinova Specialized Polyclinic, Dr. Imran Asif Bwaja, said the hospital has made significant progress since it was established nearly three years ago and is now entering a new phase of healthcare expansion.

He attributed the hospital’s achievements to the favorable investment environment created by the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan. He also expressed appreciation to the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner’s Office and district authorities for their continued support and cooperation.

Consultant Physician Dr. Selestine Mpiri described physiotherapy as a rehabilitation treatment that uses specialized exercises and evidence-based clinical techniques to restore physical function without relying on medication.

He noted that many people still mistakenly equate physiotherapy with massage therapy, emphasizing that physiotherapy focuses on identifying the root cause of a patient’s condition and treating it using scientifically proven therapeutic methods to achieve long-term recovery.

“Physiotherapy employs a range of treatment approaches, including therapeutic exercises, Manual Therapy, and Electrotherapy using modern medical equipment, depending on each patient’s clinical needs,” Dr. Mpiri said.

He explained that physiotherapy is not limited to patients recovering from accidents or surgery. It also benefits individuals with respiratory conditions, neurological disorders, balance and dizziness problems, as well as women who require pelvic floor rehabilitation to manage urinary incontinence and reduce recurrent urinary tract infections.

Dr. Mpiri also cautioned members of the public against copying physiotherapy exercises they see on social media without professional assessment, stressing that every treatment plan is individually tailored based on a patient’s age, sex, medical history, and overall health condition.

He further clarified that physiotherapy is not an excessively painful form of treatment, as commonly believed, but instead requires patience and adherence to the prescribed rehabilitation program to allow the body and nervous system to regain normal function.

Meanwhile, Medinova Specialized Polyclinic Physiotherapist PT Witney Lema said the department was established to provide drug-free rehabilitation services using internationally recognized modern treatment techniques, without the need for oral medication or injections.

She said the department treats a wide range of conditions, including back, neck, and knee pain, musculoskeletal disorders, injuries resulting from accidents and fractures, as well as neurological conditions such as stroke rehabilitation.

According to PT Lema, the global demand for physiotherapy services continues to rise due to the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, injuries, and other conditions that limit people’s ability to carry out daily activities.

“This department provides a solution that helps patients regain their functional independence, return to work more effectively, and improve their overall quality of life without excessive reliance on medication,” she said.

She explained that the department primarily offers two treatment approaches: Manual Therapy, where therapists use hands-on techniques to assess and treat musculoskeletal conditions, and Electrotherapy, which uses advanced medical devices to accelerate the rehabilitation process and support recovery.

In addition to physiotherapy, Medinova Specialized Polyclinic provides a comprehensive range of specialist medical services, including internal medicine, paediatrics, women’s health, dermatology and aesthetic medicine, dental care, and modern laboratory services that deliver fast and accurate diagnostic results.
