Public-Private Partnership strengthens Tanzania’s education sector
DAR ES SALAAM: Improving access to quality education extends beyond building schools and recruiting teachers. It also requires adequate learning facilities that allow pupils to study in a safe, comfortable and dignified environment.
Though being addressed by the government and stakeholders, across Tanzania, shortages of classroom furniture remain among the challenges affecting teaching and learning, particularly in fast-growing communities where school enrolment continues to increase.
Recognising this need, LALJI FOUNDATION has donated 100 desks to Mdimni Primary School in Mkuranga District and Tomoni Primary School in Kibiti District, Coast Region, contributing to ongoing efforts to improve learning conditions in public schools.
The donation forms part of broader initiatives in which private institutions, community organisations and development partners work alongside the Government to address infrastructure gaps in the education sector. While the Government continues investing in classrooms, teachers and learning materials, partnerships with non-state actors have increasingly become important in expanding access to quality education and improving school facilities.
The newly donated desks are expected to reduce classroom furniture shortages in the two schools, allowing more pupils to learn in an organised and conducive environment. In many public schools, inadequate desks force several pupils to share limited seating or, in some cases, study while seated on the floor, conditions that can negatively affect concentration, classroom participation and overall academic performance.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, LALJI FOUNDATION Chairman Imtiaz Lalji said improving learning environments remains one of the practical ways through which stakeholders can contribute to the country’s long-term development.
He said education continues to be a key pillar of national development because it equips young people with knowledge, practical skills and values needed to participate in economic and social transformation. Investments in school infrastructure, he noted, complement broader government programmes aimed at improving education outcomes across the country.
According to Mr Lalji, the foundation will continue working with government institutions and other partners to implement projects that respond to community needs, particularly in education, healthcare and social development.
He observed that sustainable development requires collaboration among different stakeholders, noting that government efforts are strengthened when complemented by contributions from the private sector, charitable organisations and local communities.Education specialists have consistently identified classroom infrastructure as one of the essential factors influencing learning outcomes. Adequate desks, classrooms, sanitation facilities and teaching materials create conditions that allow teachers to conduct lessons effectively while enabling pupils to participate comfortably throughout the school day.
Research has also shown that improved learning environments contribute to better attendance, increased learner motivation and reduced classroom disruptions. While desks alone do not determine academic success, they form part of the basic infrastructure necessary for effective teaching and learning.
The donation to Mdimni and Tomoni primary schools reflects this understanding by addressing one of the everyday challenges facing learners and teachers.
LALJI FOUNDATION has supported a number of community initiatives in different parts of Tanzania over the years, focusing mainly on education, health and social welfare. Its programmes have included support for schools, health institutions and community development initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life in underserved communities.
Like many charitable foundations operating in Tanzania, the organisation complements public investment by supporting projects that directly respond to local needs. Such partnerships have become increasingly important as demand for education services continues to grow alongside population growth and expanding school enrolment.
During the event, Magawa Ward Councillor Diba Kisuguru said the additional desks would help ease classroom congestion and improve learning conditions for pupils.
He noted that reducing shortages of classroom furniture contributes to more effective teaching by creating an organised classroom environment where learners can participate more comfortably in daily lessons.
School administrators also described the donation as timely.
The Head Teacher of Tomoni Primary School said pupil enrolment has continued to increase in recent years, resulting in greater demand for desks and other learning facilities. He said the additional furniture would help address immediate classroom needs while improving the overall learning environment.
He added that the school administration would ensure the desks are properly maintained so they continue serving current pupils as well as future generations.
Representing fellow learners, a pupil from Mdimni Primary School said the new desks would enable students to study in a more comfortable environment, making it easier to concentrate during lessons.
The pupil also pledged that students would work together with teachers and school leaders to take proper care of the furniture so that it remains useful for many years.
Education remains one of Tanzania’s highest development priorities, with sustained efforts being made to improve access, quality and equity across all levels of learning. Significant progress has been recorded in expanding school enrolment and constructing classrooms in many parts of the country. However, infrastructure challenges—including shortages of desks, laboratories, libraries and teachers’ houses—continue to exist in some areas, highlighting the importance of complementary support from multiple stakeholders.
Public-private partnerships have therefore emerged as an important approach to strengthening education service delivery. Through corporate social responsibility programmes, charitable foundations and community initiatives, private organisations continue contributing resources that help improve school infrastructure, learning materials and access to education.
Such interventions not only address immediate needs but also reinforce broader national goals of ensuring every child has access to a conducive learning environment.
The donation of 100 desks to schools in Mkuranga and Kibiti demonstrates how targeted support can produce practical improvements at community level. Although modest compared to nationwide education needs, initiatives of this nature help reduce resource gaps while encouraging greater collaboration between government institutions, local communities and development partners.
As Tanzania continues implementing policies aimed at improving education quality, partnerships that combine public investment with community participation and private-sector support are expected to remain an important component of sustainable development.
For beneficiary schools, the desks represent more than additional furniture. They provide learners with improved classroom conditions, support teachers in delivering lessons more effectively and contribute to creating an environment where children can focus on learning with dignity. Collectively, such efforts illustrate how cooperation among stakeholders can strengthen the education sector and support the country’s long-term human capital development agenda.
