90-year Ulene hits milestone as among the oldest conquerors of Mt Kilimanjaro

MOSHI: A 90-year-old retired American doctor, Art Ulene, has made history after successfully reaching the Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro, becoming one of the oldest climbers to achieve the feat.
Dr Ulene reached the summit on Monday, July 13, 2026, fulfilling a personal dream and marking the milestone with a special birthday celebration at Africa’s highest peak.

According to information from the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), the old man was surrounded by guides, porters and fellow climbers where he cut a birthday cake at the summit as he celebrated his achievement and received congratulations for his determination and endurance at an advanced age.

According to TANAPA, the remarkable accomplishment has further highlighted Mount Kilimanjaro’s global appeal as a destination that continues to attract adventurers of different ages seeking personal challenges, achievement and unforgettable experiences.
It has also placed Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro National Park in the spotlight, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the world’s leading destinations for mountain tourism.
