Tanzania seizes gold worth 1.345bn/- in its efforts to curb mineral trafficking

BUKOBA: AUTHORITIES have intercepted gold worth 1.345bn/- that was being illegally smuggled out of the country, in the latest crackdown aimed at curbing mineral trafficking and protecting Tanzania’s mining revenues.
The gold was seized during an operation conducted on July 1, 2026 by the Tanzania Police Force, the Mining Commission, security organs and the Task Force on Combating Mineral Smuggling.
Speaking to media outlets in the Kagera region, Deputy Minister for Minerals Dr Steven Kiruswa said verification and valuation of the seized minerals established that the consignment consisted of 163 gold pieces weighing 4,434.66 grams.
He said the government has strengthened monitoring systems and cooperation among relevant authorities to identify and prevent illegal mineral trade, warning that individuals involved in smuggling activities will face legal action.

“Some people continue attempting to bypass official channels, but the government remains committed to protecting the country’s mineral resources and ensuring that the sector benefits Tanzanians,” the deputy minister said.
He said the government will continue strengthening supervision of the mining sector and working with security organs to address mineral smuggling, which denies the country revenue and undermines legitimate mining businesses.
Dr Kiruswa revealed that between July 2025 and March 2026, the government seized minerals worth Sh3.31 billion in 55 separate incidents recorded across the country.

He called on miners, mineral dealers, brokers and the public to use official mineral markets and buying centres established nationwide to conduct their businesses safely and legally.
The Deputy Minister said more than 40 official mineral markets and buying centres have been established across Tanzania, providing a secure platform for mineral trading while ensuring the government collects rightful revenues from the sector.
He urged stakeholders in the mining industry to cooperate with authorities by reporting illegal activities, saying responsible mineral trading is essential for sustainable development and economic growth.
