PL kick off on August 14

TANZANIA: THE 2026/27 Mainland Premier League season will begin on August 14th, with the Community Shield curtain-raiser taking place two days earlier, Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) President Wallace Karia has announced.

Karia unveiled the 2026/27 football calendar at a press briefing in Dar es Salaam yesterday, announcing that the season will begin with the Community Shield on 12 August, when Mainland Premier League champions Young Africans face FA Cup holders Simba.

He said the league schedule had been carefully planned to accommodate Tanzania’s international commitments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and the tournament itself.

“The league will start on 14 August, and we have structured the fixture calendar to create room for our international commitments,” Karia said.

According to the TFF president, the 2026/27 league season is scheduled to conclude on 16 May 2027, allowing adequate time for preparations ahead of the 2027 AFCON, which is set to begin on 16 June.

Karia added that the federation has retained its existing competition regulations, including the format involving four teams in the relevant championship structure, with no changes introduced ahead of the new campaign.

In a separate development, TFF Media and Communications Officer Cliford Ndimbo urged clubs to complete their transfer business within the registration window, which opened on July 6th and closes on August 15th.

He reminded clubs that signing a player or announcing a transfer does not automatically make the player eligible to compete.

“A club can sign a player and even announce them publicly, but that does not mean the player is eligible to play,” Ndimbo said. He explained that every player must be formally registered in the TFF system and all transfer requirements fulfilled before a playing licence can be issued.

For international transfers, clubs must also obtain an International Transfer Certificate (ITC) from the player’s previous football association. Without the ITC, a player may be registered but will not be eligible to feature in official matches.

Ndimbo said the transfer window allows clubs to register new signings, renew contracts for existing players, and complete permanent or loan transfers.
