ACT- Wazalendo calls for Zanzibaris’ support in political reconciliation process

ZANZIBAR: ACT- Wazalendo has called on Zanzibaris to support the ongoing political reconciliation process, saying the initiative is aimed at securing a better future for the country rather than serving the interests of political parties or individuals.
The call was made by the ACT Wazalendo Zanzibar Chairman Othman Masoud Othman today, July 9, 2026, during the signing of a joint declaration between Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and ACT Wazalendo, noting that some people doubt the process due to past experiences, others oppose it because they do not want changes that promote unity and good governance.
Mr Othman said there are three groups of people responding differently to the reconciliation efforts, including those who have lost confidence because of repeated political challenges in the past, those who are willing to support genuine efforts if implemented with honesty, and those completely opposed to the process.
He said the group opposing reconciliation is against not only the dialogue process but also the idea of the Government of National Unity, arguing that such people viewed reconciliation as a threat to their interests rather than an opportunity for Zanzibar’s progress.
“Those who oppose this process must understand that revolution does not mean disorder, violence or the absence of laws and procedures. Revolution means responding to citizens’ desire for positive change for the benefit of the nation,” Mr Othman said.
He argued that Zanzibar’s history demonstrates that major reforms have been achieved through wisdom, dialogue and leadership decisions, citing past leaders who introduced political and constitutional changes to strengthen citizens’ rights and governance systems.
He further highlighted reforms undertaken by former Zanzibar presidents, including Amani Abeid Karume, who oversaw constitutional amendments that led to the establishment of the Government of National Unity, and Ali Mohamed Shein, who advanced public service reforms.
“Such reforms were made by leaders who understood the history and objectives of the Zanzibar Revolution and change should always be guided by laws, justice and the interests of citizens,” he said.
Mr Othman pledged that ACT Wazalendo would continue supporting the reconciliation process and ensure that it delivers meaningful outcomes for the people of Zanzibar.
