TPDF reassures peace, security

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) has assured the public that security across the country remains stable, urging citizens to disregard calls inciting violence and continue with their daily activities without fear.
TPDF Director of Information and Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Sylvester Mangure, said yesterday that peace and stability continue to prevail nationwide, attributing the situation to strong cooperation between citizens and security organs in safeguarding national order.
“Thanks to the patriotic cooperation between citizens and security organs in safeguarding national peace, the prevailing tranquillity has enabled Tanzanians to continue with their daily lives and contribute to national development,” the statement read.
However, the Force cautioned that some individuals with ill intentions are spreading misinformation and attempting to mobilise members of the public to engage in acts of violence and disruption of public order.
It said such individuals are also trying to tarnish the image of the military by falsely claiming that it would protect perpetrators of violence and unrest.
“Their actions have the potential to cause harm to participants and other innocent citizens, destroy property, disrupt economic and social activities and ultimately undermine the country’s economy,” the statement warned.
TPDF urged citizens to ignore all calls promoting violence and instead continue with their normal activities while maintaining peace, unity and stability.
It further warned that it will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone involved in acts that threaten national peace and security.
The statement cited Article 147(2) of the Constitution of Tanzania of 1977, which mandates the TPDF to defend the nation and its people and Section 22 of the National Defence Act, Cap 192, which allows the Force to assist civil authorities in cases of riots, violence or public disorder.
The military also called on citizens to report any signs of incitement or planned disruption of peace to village and street leaders and relevant security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains essential in maintaining stability.
TPDF reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the nation, safeguarding the constitution and supporting civil authorities with professionalism, discipline, loyalty and courage.
