HESLB awards 11 institutions excelled in providing information on loan beneficiaries

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB) has awarded 11 institutions that perform well in providing information on loan beneficiaries, which speeds up loan collection.

Speaking during the award ceremony, the Board’s Executive Director, Dr Billy Kawia commended the institutions that have proven in practice compliance with the law, where they have been an important contribution to the nation through their responsibility to submit information on new employees and timely loan repayment.

“You have contributed significantly to strengthening the fund and increasing the ability to reach more students who need financial assistance to obtain higher education. I thank all those who collaborated with us in implementing the law, you have been an important pillar for students to join higher education every year.

He added “Today, someone is donating nearly 500m/- per month to us and I thank the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) for your contribution and today’s awards to recognize your patriotism.

Kawia said that since the establishment of the board until today, June 12, 2026, they have provided 9.5 tri/- to 1m million beneficiary students and where for every household there is one person who has received a higher education loan.

He said in 2022, the board collected 169bn/-, in 2023 it was 177bn/-, in 2024 they collected 194.5 bn/- and in 2025/2026 they have reached 220bn/- or more, indicating that the government provided 916.7bn/- for higher education loans.

“When President Samia came to power, we were receiving 560bn/-, this year we have received  916.7 bn/- and next year, starting July we will receive more than 1tri/- and we have continued to break a record that has never happened since the board was established because when it was established we were collecting 50bn/-, now we are collecting 240bn/-,” he explained.
