Dr Kijaji lauds UN Tourism’s strategic direction in advancing global tourism and sustainability

TOLEDO, SPAIN: THE Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Ashatu Kijaji has lauded the UN Tourism leadership and strategic direction and reaffirmed Tanzania commitment to deepening cooperation with the UN Tourism, pledging continued collaboration to strengthen global tourism development and sustainability.

Speaking at the 126th session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, Minister Kijaji commended the organisation for effectively coordinating global tourism affairs, saying its 2026–2029 governance vision demonstrates clear leadership and a strong roadmap for advancing the sector worldwide.

She said Tanzania values UN Tourism’s continued support to member states, including initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable tourism development highlighting rural tourism development programmes as a key success story, noting that they have improved livelihoods, created economic opportunities, and enhanced community wellbeing.

“Such programmes underscore tourism’s growing role as an inclusive and sustainable driver of development, particularly for communities surrounding wildlife and tourist attraction areas,” she said.

Reaffirming Tanzania’s commitment, Kijaji said the country will continue working closely with UN Tourism and other member states to build a resilient tourism sector capable of driving economic growth, environmental conservation, and social wellbeing.

She added that Tanzania remains ready to further strengthen cooperation with the agency to ensure tourism development goals are effectively achieved.

On climate change, Kijaji said the government will intensify efforts to strengthen resilience in wildlife and coastal tourism areas, focusing on sustainable management and practical measures to mitigate climate-related impacts.

She further noted that enhancing resilience in tourism destinations is critical to safeguarding jobs and protecting incomes for communities dependent on the sector.
