Beauty products face higher excise duty of up to 15%

DODOMA: MINISTER of Finance Khamis Mussa Omar has announced that the Government is proposing a 10 percent excise duty on imported UV/LED nail polish drying machines classified under HS Code 8516.79.00.
Presenting the Government’s revenue and expenditure estimates for the 2026/2027 financial year in Parliament, the minister said the measure is intended to reduce potential health risks associated with the use of the machines, including the risk of cancer, while also broadening the country’s tax base.
According to the minister, the implementation of the proposal is expected to generate approximately TZS 566.5 million in additional government revenue.
In a separate measure, the Government has proposed increasing the excise duty on imported beauty products from 10 percent to 15 percent. The affected products fall under HS Headings 33.03, 33.04, 33.05, and 33.07.
Omar stated that the increase aims to boost government revenue and align Tanzania’s excise duty rates with those applied in some member states of the East African Community (EAC), including Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda
