The discussions highlighted growing political mutual trust, economic collaboration and shared positions on international affairs. In the course, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Tanzania at the invitation of Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo.

The meeting was described as warm and cordial, reflecting the historical ties between the two nations that date back more than six decades.

A friendship rooted in history

The partnership between China and Tanzania has deep historical roots dating back to the era of China’s Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai and Tanzania’s founding father, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.

The strong friendship established by these visionary leaders laid the foundation for one of Africa’s most enduring diplomatic relationships with China. During the struggle for African liberation and postindependence development, China stood alongside Tanzania in supporting African unity, sovereignty and economic progress.

One of the most significant symbols of this cooperation was the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) in the 1970s. Built with Chinese assistance, the railway became a landmark project representing solidarity, friendship and South-South cooperation between China and Africa. Over the decades, the relationship has continued to grow stronger through mutual respect, political trust and shared development goals.

During the talks, the China side conveyed its congratulatory message to Tanzania for the successful conduct of the General Elections held in October 2025 and expressed strong support for the Government of Tanzania to safeguard constitutional order, protect lives, property, and national stability in according with law. Both countries emphasised the importance of safeguarding national unity, constitutional order, and stability while rejecting violence and foreign interference in domestic matters. Tanzania reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to support the one-China principle and reiterated its consistent position of recognising that there is but one China in the world and respecting China’s national unity and territorial integrity, underscoring that any form of secession is unacceptable. Tanzania further supports all efforts by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification and the protection of its territorial integrity.

Expanding economic cooperation

Economic cooperation formed a major part of the discussions. China and Tanzania agreed to align their national development strategies, including Tanzania’s National Development Vision 2050 and China’s 2035 vision of basically realising socialist modernisation. China pledged to continue supporting Tanzania in infrastructure, health, education, agriculture, green development and the digital economy. Both countries also agreed to increase trade and investment opportunities.
