Migrant Workers Support Centre to open in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA), in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), is set to officially launch the TUCTA Migrant Workers Resource Centre (TUCTA-MWRC), aimed at supporting Tanzanians seeking employment opportunities abroad.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam today, TUCTA Deputy Secretary General Rehema Ludanga said the centre will be officially inaugurated on June 11, 2026, through the Better Regional Migration Management (BRMM) project, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (UK-FCDO).

She noted that the launch will take place at the WDC Building on Lumumba Road in Dar es Salaam and is intended to strengthen coordination on labour migration issues while ensuring that Tanzanians seeking jobs abroad use safe and legally recognized channels.

According to Ludanga, TUCTA, as the leading advocate and protector of workers’ rights and interests in Tanzania, established the centre to provide accurate information, guidance, and advisory services to Tanzanians going abroad for work, as well as foreign workers coming to Tanzania.

“This centre will help ensure that the rights, interests, and welfare of migrant workers are protected through transparent employment contracts that safeguard their interests,” she said.

In addition to advisory services, the centre will offer short-term training programmes to help workers prepare for working and living conditions in their destination countries. The initiative aims to enhance their ability to benefit from international employment opportunities safely and effectively.

Foreign workers coming to Tanzania will also have the opportunity to join trade unions to ensure that their rights and interests are adequately represented and protected.

According to TUCTA, the initiative also supports the implementation of Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050 by contributing to human capital development, expanding employment opportunities, and strengthening Tanzanians’ contribution to the national economy.

The programme is also aligned with the efforts of President Samia Suluhu Hassan to promote economic diplomacy, strengthen international cooperation, and create more employment and investment opportunities for Tanzanians.

TUCTA and the ILO have invited stakeholders from government institutions, the private sector, trade unions, employers’ organizations, educational and training institutions, financial institutions, civil society organizations, media outlets, and development partners to participate in the launch event.

They said broad stakeholder participation will contribute to the success of efforts aimed at ensuring labour migration is conducted safely, transparently, and with full respect for the rights and dignity of all workers within and outside Tanzania.
