TSN nominated for best lawabiding media house award

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA Standard (Newspapers) Limited (TSN) has been nominated in the Best Law Abiding Media House of the Year category in the 2025 Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzania (EJAT), placing the state-owned media house among the country’s top journalism institutions recognised for professionalism and ethical reporting.

The company publishes Tanzania’s leading newspapers – Daily News, Sunday News, HabariLEO and SpotiLEO.

It also publishes digital news items through its social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. TSN joins other leading media organisations, including Azam Media, Nukta Africa, Mwananchi Newspaper, The Guardian Newspaper and Jamhuri Newspaper, in a competition widely regarded as a benchmark for journalism excellence and newsroom professionalism in Tanzania.

The EJAT Preparatory Committee, chaired by Judge Mwanzo Milinga under the auspices of MCT, said the selections were informed by views from more than 200 journalists, editors, judges and media stakeholders consulted through a nationwide survey.

“This process reflects broad industry participation and professional assessment from across the country,” the committee said in a statement.

Executive Secretary of the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT), Mr Ernest Sungura, said the survey findings had highlighted the need for broader representation within the awards framework, particularly in digital journalism, regional reporting and collaborative investigative projects operating beyond traditional newsroom structures.

As a result, EJAT 2025 has introduced several new categories aimed at reflecting shifts in the media landscape and encouraging specialised reporting.

The new awards include the MSI Tanzania Reproductive Health Journalism Award, the Uwezo Tanzania Education Reporting Award, Best Interview of the Year, Best Law-Abiding Media House of the Year, Best Media House with Specialised Expertise of the Year and the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Conservation Award.

According to MCT, the expanded structure is intended to strengthen accountability journalism, elevate ethical standards and encourage reporting that generates measurable social impact. Senior journalist for Habari Leo, Ms Halima Mlacha, has been named among the nominees for the Partners and Media Houses Awards.

MCT said nominees were evaluated based on accuracy, ethical conduct, public-interest value and adherence to media laws and professional standards.
