Lawmakers demand tougher action on drug abuse

ZANZIBAR: MEMBERS of the House of Representatives have called for stricter enforcement of laws regulating narcotic drugs, warning that rising substance abuse among young people is threatening productivity and community wellbeing.

The concerns were raised during debate on the 2026/2027 budget for the President’s Office – Regional Administration, Local Government and Special Departments at the Chukwani chamber.

Representative Jaku Hashim Ayoub (Paje, CCM) said authorities must tighten controls on the importation and distribution of illicit drugs to protect young people from addiction.

He stressed the need for stronger cooperation between government institutions and communities in the fight against drug abuse.

Meanwhile, Representative Juma Usonge (Chaani, CCM) urged the ministry to construct offices for District Commissioners in North A and North B districts, saying the current buildings are outdated and unsuitable for senior government leaders.

He called for speedy implementation of the project to improve the leaders’ working environment.

Representative Ibrahim Makungu (Mtoni, CCM) commended the Eighth Phase Government for implementing development projects, including modern markets that have eased challenges facing traders.

He also praised ongoing investments in roads and public transport terminals, saying the projects are helping improve the image and infrastructure of Zanzibar Town.

Makungu urged wananchi to safeguard the public facilities, noting that they were built using substantial public funds.

Representative Moza Mohamed Khamis (Special Seats) called on authorities to address persistent complaints surrounding parking systems, saying some motorists continue to face disputed charges despite paying the required fees.

She said the issue has generated widespread concern among members of the public and requires urgent attention.
