Tanzania begins paying arrears of social security contributions, transfer dues to its workers

NJOMBE: THE Tanzanian government has begun paying arrears of social security contributions, leave allowances, transfer dues and salary arrears as part of ongoing efforts to clear verified workers’ claims.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced this during the Workers’ Day celebrations held in Njombe today, May 1, 2026.

Addressing thousands of workers, President Samia said the government will continue settling the debts progressively based on ongoing verification and assessment of claims, stressing that not all demands can be paid instantly without proper scrutiny.

“We are not just presented with claims and pay them on the spot. We must assess those that are proven to be legitimate claims, we have started paying and we will continue to pay,” she said, noting that the exercise is already underway.

Additionally, the President directed the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Employment and Relations) to work closely with the Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA) and Association of Tanzania Employers to resolve outstanding issues through structured engagement.

According to the President, the resolution of labour disputes requires joint responsibility between government and social partners, insisting that dialogue remains the most effective path to lasting solutions.
