Tanzania and New Zealand agree to broaden their diplomatic, economic ties

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA and New Zealand have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen diplomatic and economic cooperation.

This was reached in a discussion between the Director of Asia and Australasia Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Felista Rugambwa and the new Zealand’s Deputy High Commissioner to Tanzania, based in South Africa, Nick Meehan, where the two sides underscored the need to expand collaboration in key sectors.

In their discussion, the Director informed the envoy that Tanzania values its longstanding ties with New Zealand and is ready to strengthen cooperation in strategic areas including trade, investment, education, modern agriculture, tourism, technology, as well as capacity building and skills exchange.

Additionally, she said that enhanced partnerships in the sectors will support economic growth and sustainable development in the country.

On his part, Mr Meehan, who is in the country for an official visit, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to broadening cooperation across all identified areas, citing significant potential in the aviation sector to boost tourism.

The envoy further praised Tanzania’s world-renowned attractions such as Mount Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Serengeti National Park and the beaches of Zanzibar as key drivers for tourism growth.

The two leaders also highlighted the importance of collaboration in international platforms, including the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations, where both countries continue to work together on issues of peace, security and social development.

Mr Meehan’s visit, running from April 27 to May 5, 2026, aims to engage stakeholders and explore new areas of cooperation, marking a significant step in strengthening diplomatic relations between Tanzania and New Zealand.
