Govt speeds Mkapa pitch rehab

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has pledged to fast-track renovation work at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, with a new pitch and wider upgrades set to be completed before August as Tanzania prepares to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The work is already underway, with the existing playing surface and top layer removed to allow for a new pitch system designed to improve drainage and meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.
The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, who is also the Government Spokesperson, said the project was being implemented at pace and in line with international requirements.
“We have started removing the old pitch and its upper layers so we can install a modern surface that meets CAF standards, particularly in terms of drainage and quality of play,” he said.
“We are working with a reputable international company to ensure the stadium is upgraded to the required level within the set timeframe.”
Beyond the pitch, the project will include improvements to infrastructure, seating areas and VVIP facilities, as well as a broader facelift to give the stadium a more modern appearance following earlier renovation phases.
“This is a comprehensive upgrade. We are improving key areas across the stadium to ensure it meets the standards expected for a major continental tournament,” Msigwa said.
Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is among the venues selected for AFCON, which Tanzania will co-host with Kenya and Uganda.

CAF has directed that match venues and training facilities should reach at least 79–80 per cent readiness by August. Msigwa said the government would closely monitor progress to ensure the deadline is met.
“We will closely supervise the work to ensure everything is completed on time and to the required standards,” he said.
Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam and the Samia Suluhu Hassan Stadium in Arusha have been designated as the main venues for hosting football matches.
Samia Stadium is under construction, reaching above 75 per cent. In Zanzibar, the New Amaan Complex is already ready to host matches, while work is ongoing at Fumba Stadium.
In addition to the main venues, several training grounds are also being prepared. Construction is underway at Leaders Club Ground and Farasi Ground, while works at Major General Isamuhyo Ground, Gymkhana Club Ground and Law School Ground have been completed.
