Arusha sees speedy construction of key access roads to the AFCON Stadium

ARUSHA: CONSTRUCTION of key access roads to the AFCON stadium in Arusha has gained momentum, with the government setting May 2027 as the firm deadline for completion of the 21.4-kilometre project.

The Chief Executive of the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), Eng Victor Seff, said during an inspection tour that works have already commenced on the Essuri road section, as part of efforts to ensure infrastructure is ready ahead of the continental tournament.

He noted that while some sections are progressing, others are pending compensation processes for affected residents, with ongoing engagements to avoid delays.

“The government’s goal is to ensure these roads are completed by May 2027 so they are ready before AFCON,” he stressed, adding that the project is being implemented under a Design and Build model to fast-track delivery, with procurement procedures already finalised.

The project, being executed by M/s China Railway Construction Engineering Group, has started with the 2.45-kilometre Essuri road, including construction of a 100-metre bridge. Additional works will cover the 2.75-kilometre Lendita road—planned as a four-lane route in phase two—and the 6.5-kilometre Mateves road, which will feature both two-lane and four-lane sections.

Eng Seff said the project will not only improve infrastructure but also create jobs for local communities, urging youth to seize the opportunity. Consultant engineer Idephonce Karol from M/s Afrisa Construction Engineering Group said preliminary works, including surveys, soil tests and site clearance, are progressing well since the project’s official launch on April 1, 2026, with teams working around the clock to meet the deadline.
