OGTL hands over gas cylinders to boost clean cooking drive

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Oryx Gas Tanzania Limited (OGTL) has handed over 200 sets of gas cylinders to the government through the Ministry of Energy as part of efforts to support the national clean cooking energy agenda.

The cylinders were officially presented on Tuesday during the Mama na Baba Lishe conference held in Dar es Salaam, where the President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, officiated as the guest of honour.

At the event, President Samia symbolically distributed the Oryx cylinders to selected Mama na Baba Lishe vendors, signaling the government’s commitment to accelerating the transition from traditional cooking fuels such as charcoal and firewood to cleaner and more efficient liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Speaking at the conference, President Samia underscored the vital role played by small-scale food vendors in driving the country’s economy and ensuring access to safe and nutritious meals for wananchi.

She emphasised that empowering the group with clean energy solutions not only improves their livelihoods but also contributes to better public health and environmental conservation.

The Head of State commended stakeholders who participated in the conference, including Oryx Gas Tanzania, for supporting the promotion of clean cooking technologies across the country.

Earlier during the event, Oryx Gas Tanzania Limited conducted a large-scale training session for participants, focusing on the proper and safe use of LPG. The training covered key areas such as efficient gas usage, safety standards, economic benefits, as well as environmental and health advantages associated with clean cooking energy.

A total of 5,000 participants benefited from the training programme held alongside the conference.
The sessions were facilitated by OGTL Training Manager, Mr Peter Ndomba, who noted that the company takes pride in organising such a significant initiative aimed at empowering food vendors with knowledge and practical skills on clean energy use.

He affirmed that the company remains committed to rolling out similar programmes nationwide as part of its broader contribution to Tanzania’s sustainable development agenda.

“Our goal is to continue supporting food vendors to adopt clean cooking energy, improve their livelihoods and contribute to national efforts on environmental conservation and sustainable development,” he said.

Mr Ndomba further described the initiative as a milestone in advancing inclusive economic growth, improving community health and accelerating the country’s transition to sustainable energy use.
