Tanzania commits to Specialised Healthcare as it hosts Neurosurgical meeting

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening specialised healthcare systems as it hosts the second international conference of the Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, bringing together global experts in brain, spine and nervous system surgery.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Seif Shekalaghe, made the statement during the conference held in Dar es Salaam today, April 16, 2026, stating that Tanzania is honoured to host the conference, describing it as an important platform for advancing collaboration in specialised medical care.

The conference has brought together key health stakeholders, including international and local neurosurgeons with a theme that reflects the importance of cooperation in prevention, timely treatment and emergency response in neurological care.

The conference highlighted growing calls to elevate neurosurgery services as an essential part of national health systems, rather than a luxury or secondary priority.

President of the Neurosurgical Society Federation, Professor Tariq Khan, said countries must integrate neurosurgical care into national health strategies, stressing that it is a critical investment rather than an optional service.

He noted that investing in brain, spine and nervous system care helps save young lives, protects the productive workforce and strengthens overall health system resilience.

Prof Khan also called for global recognition of traumatic brain injuries as a priority public health issue requiring coordinated action, urging Tanzania and other partners to support the initiative at an upcoming World Health Organisation meeting in Geneva.

The conference is expected to strengthen international cooperation in advancing neurosurgical care and improving emergency medical response systems across participating countries.
