Simba cruise past Fountain Gate

ARUSHA: SIMBA SC reignited their title charge with a commanding 3-0 demolition of Fountain Gate at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium yesterday, cutting the lead at the summit of the Mainland Premier League to just five points.

The clinical victory moves the Msimbazi giants to 39 points, piling the pressure on rivals Young Africans.

For Fountain Gate, the defeat leaves them languishing in 14th place with 16 points, firmly entrenched in the relegation dogfight.

The result marks a successful conclusion to Simba’s Arusha stint, where they claimed four points from two Premier League outings, while maintaining a streak of scoring three goals in successive matches following their Federation Cup triumph over Dodoma Jiji.

Simba asserted their authority from the opening whistle, though a stubborn Fountain Gate defence held firm for much of the first half.

Playmaker Anicet Oura forced a smart save from goalkeeper Machupa Kapili in the 30th minute, before Nickson Kibabage saw a goal-bound effort narrowly miss the target five minutes later.

The breakthrough finally arrived in stoppage time of the first half.

A dangerous cross from Libasse Guèye caused chaos in the area.

While Jimson Mwanuke’s desperate clearance temporarily cleared the immediate danger, the ever-alert Clatous Chama pounced on the loose ball.

The Zambian international rifled a low strike into the bottom corner to send the travelling fans into raptures.

The “Reds” showed no signs of complacency after the interval. In the 53rd minute, the stadium was treated to a moment of pure artistry.

Selemani Mwalimu turned provider with an audacious back-heel flick into the path of Guèye, who danced through the backline before slotting a clinical finish past the stranded Kapili.

The rout was completed in the 71st minute when Elie Mpanzu’s fizzing cross from the left flank forced an error from Shabani Mgunda.

Under pressure, the defender’s attempted clearance deflected into his own net, compounding a miserable afternoon for the hosts.

Having replicated the 3-0 scoreline from their previous meeting in September, Simba look like a side in imperious form as the title race enters its most critical phase.

Fountain Gate, meanwhile, must find answers quickly if they are to avoid the drop.
