Azam FC uurged to strengthen defence and build Long-Term Project, Says Hans Rafael

DAR ES SALAAM: Azam FC has been advised to reinforce its central defence and adopt a long-term rebuilding approach if it is to compete consistently for domestic and international honours.
Sports analyst Ansibert Rafael, popularly known as ‘Hans Rafael,’ praised head coach Florent Ibenge for striking a strong balance between local and foreign players within the squad, noting that several Tanzanian talents are capable of holding starting positions.
He mentioned players such as Aishi Manula, Lusajo Mwaikenda, Twalib Nuru, Himid Mao, Pascal Msindo, Feisal Salum, Iddy Nado and Nassor Saadun as key local assets who can influence the team’s performance when fully utilised.
However, Rafael said Azam FC’s main weakness lies in central defence, urging the club to prioritise strengthening that area rather than focusing mainly on attacking reinforcements.
He noted that while the club often signs quality forwards, defensive depth and organisation remain inconsistent, limiting its ability to challenge for major titles.

“Winning mentality is crucial. Azam FC players need to be psychologically prepared and believe they can compete with and defeat Simba and Yanga SC,” he said.
Rafael added that the team frequently loses points against lower-ranked sides due to lack of concentration and complacency, a trend that has cost them in title races.
He further suggested that the club consider recruiting ambitious players from West and Central Africa to raise the level of competition within the squad.
Commenting on head coach Florent Ibenge, Rafael said the Congolese tactician has quality and a clear philosophy, but faces challenges due to a mismatch between his tactical demands and the squad’s characteristics.
“Ibenge prefers a physical, high-tempo and disciplined defensive style, while many Azam players are more technical and possession-oriented but lack physical strength,” he explained.
He stressed that the team’s struggles should not be seen as coaching failure, but rather inconsistency in execution, especially in matches against mid-table opposition.
Rafael concluded by urging patience from the club’s leadership, recommending that Ibenge be given at least two seasons to fully rebuild the squad, particularly the defensive line, without the pressure of immediate dismissal.
