Tanzania invites global lawmakers as it readies to host the 153rd IPU Assembly

ISTANBUL: TANZANIA has stepped up efforts to position itself on the global parliamentary stage, inviting international lawmakers to attend the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, which it will host.

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Daniel Sillo, made the call while leading the Tanzanian delegation at the 152nd IPU Assembly in Istanbul, Türkiye, where he held talks with the IPU President and former Speaker of Tanzania’s Parliament, Dr Tulia Ackson.

During the meeting held at the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel, Mr Sillo conveyed greetings from the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mussa Azzan Zungu, and formally introduced members of the Tanzanian delegation attending the global parliamentary gathering.

The 152nd IPU Assembly is scheduled to officially run from today, April 15 to 19, 2026, bringing together legislators from across the world to deliberate on key global issues.

Mr Sillo reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to promoting its investment opportunities and tourist attractions on the international stage, using the forum as a platform to showcase the country’s potential.

All IPU statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and on Middle East Questions, as well as the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young MPs, will meet on this occasion.

The General Debate will focus on the overall theme Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations, and provide a platform for delegates to deliberate, exchange views and galvanize parliamentary action in this area.

The Assembly is expected to adopt resolutions on the emergency item and on the subject items taken up by the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security entitled The role of parliaments in establishing robust post‑conflict management mechanisms and restoring a just and lasting peace and by the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development entitled Building a fair and sustainable global economy: The role of parliaments in combating protectionism, reducing tariffs and preventing corporate tax avoidance.

The Assembly is expected to conclude with the adoption of an outcome document on the overall theme of the General Debate.
