Competence should trump nationality in Premier League coaching, Analyst Hans Rafael

DAR ES SALAAM: Football clubs have been urged to prioritise competence over nationality when appointing coaches in the Premier League, as calls grow for improved standards in the country’s top-flight football.

Sports analyst Ansibert Rafael, popularly known as ‘Hans Rafael,’ told Daily News on April 15 that clubs should focus on hiring capable coaches regardless of whether they are local or foreign.

“Giving priority to local coaches should not be the main consideration. What matters most is competence,” he said.

Hans Rafael observed that while local coaches have potential, many lack exposure beyond Tanzanian football and tend to remain within the domestic league instead of seeking experience abroad.

“They often avoid challenges outside the country, yet our league includes many foreign players. This sometimes makes it difficult for local coaches to adapt tactically,” he explained.

He added that broader exposure would help local coaches sharpen their skills and better manage the evolving demands of the modern game.

The analyst also weighed in on the persistent concerns surrounding refereeing standards, describing it as a long-standing issue affecting the credibility of the league.

He said repeated officiating errors and poor match management must be addressed decisively, with referees held accountable for their actions.

“Sanctions must continue, as referees have often contributed to the misfortune of many teams in the Premier League,” he said.

According to Hans Rafael, some of the errors have appeared to favour a few teams, underscoring the need for firm measures to restore integrity and respect for match officials.

His remarks come amid ongoing debate within the football fraternity on how to raise the quality and professionalism of the Premier League.
