Tanzania maps out fertiliser security plan at Washington

WASHINGTON , D.C : TANZANIA has presented its strategic measures to address global fertiliser supply challenges and strengthen access for local farmers, as part of high-level discussions held on the sidelines of the ongoing Spring Meetings in Washington DC.

Speaking during a special working session at the George Washington University, Permanent Secretary (Planning) and Executive Secretary of the National Planning Commission, Dr Tausi Mbaga Kida, said Tanzania continues to face high fertiliser demand, with the bulk of Urea, DAP, NPK and CAN still imported. She stressed that this dependence presents investment opportunities in domestic production.

Dr Kida highlighted progress recorded in the agriculture sector, including increased fertiliser production, improved efficiency in accessing quality seeds and strengthened extension services, all of which support the country’s drive toward higher productivity.

She further outlined short-, medium- and long-term measures adopted to safeguard national supply amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which have heavily disrupted global fertiliser markets. The measures include enhancing proper storage and utilisation of available stocks, seeking alternative import sources, continuing fertiliser subsidy programmes and scaling up local manufacturing.

Dr Kida noted that Tanzania is already benefiting from agricultural transformation initiatives, citing wider use of technology, research-driven fertiliser application based on specific soil needs, and programmes such as Building a Better Tomorrow (BBT), which empower youth and women engaged in agricultural production.

She reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring stable fertiliser access as a key pillar in boosting productivity, improving livelihoods and sustaining national food security.
