Bulyanhulu Mine channels 900m/- into Nyang’hwale projects

NYANG’HWALE: BARRICK Bulyanhulu, through Twiga Minerals Corporation, has pledged 900m/- to fund development projects in Nyang’hwale District Council this year, signalling a deeper push by the mining sector into local economic transformation.

The pledge, according to a statement issued to the Daily News yesterday, states that a significant portion of the fund is earmarked for the education sector, addressing critical infrastructure gaps.

Nyang’hwale Council Chairperson John Isack said after the signing ceremony that the funds are not just numbers on a page, but essential lifelines for sectors including health, education, governance and environmental conservation.

“We are focusing on projects that matter most to our people,” Mr Isack said:

“From the construction of a new gold market to beekeeping initiatives in Miyenze Forest, these projects are designed to create a self-sustaining economy for our residents.”

Twiga Minerals Corporation, a partnership between the government and Barrick Mining Corporation, is poised to deliver direct benefits from the country’s natural resources, with plans to construct the district gold market under phase one.

Barrick Bulyanhulu’s Environment and Community Relations Manager Agapiti Paul said the market is a gamechanger for the local economy.

“The gold market will be a major source of income, adding value for small-scale miners and acting as a catalyst for other wealth-generating activities,” Mr Paul said.

According to the statement, the fund would be directed to the construction of staff housing and a new water well at Iyenze Secondary School, alongside the delivery of 240 beds to dormitories at Bukwimba, Busolwa and Kenegele secondary schools. Also, New Sengerema Primary School is set to receive new desks and teachers’ furniture.

Beyond the classroom, the funds will tackle urgent community needs. This includes completing water and electricity infrastructure at Mwabui Dispensary and excavating a livestock watering hole in Ng’wasabuka Village, a vital resource for local herders.

Last year, Barrick Bulyanhulu provided 1.75bn/- in Corporate Social Responsibility funding, which significantly improved social services and livelihoods throughout the district.

The partnership between Bulyanhulu and Nyang’hwale is increasingly seen as a model for responsible mining, where corporate investment is closely aligned with the government’s broader development agenda.
