Dr Samia hails Kikwete’s appointment as AU envoy for the Horn of Africa, Red Sea region  

ADDIS ABABA: THE Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed the former President of Jakaya Kikwete as High-Level Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

The appointment, announced on March 25, 2026, is aimed at strengthening the African Union’s efforts in addressing political, peace and security challenges facing the region.

Following the announcement, President Samia Suluhu Hassan congratulated Dr Kikwete, describing the appointment as a great honour for both him and Tanzania.

The Head of State further expressed confidence in Dr Kikwete’s ability to promote African unity and contribute to lasting peace for the benefit of the continent and the global community.

In his new role, Dr Kikwete will support AU initiatives through preventive diplomacy and the facilitation of inclusive political dialogue.

Kikwete is also expected to build trust among regional stakeholders and enhance cooperation aimed at fostering sustainable peace and stability.

Moreover, he is expected to work closely with key regional and international partners, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the East African Community, the Arab League and the United Nations.

The collaboration is considered crucial given the strategic importance of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea in global trade and the overall stability of the African continent.

Mr Youssouf expressed strong confidence in Dr Kikwete’s experience, leadership and wisdom, noting that he is well-positioned to help countries in the region address ongoing challenges while promoting prosperity and lasting peace.

The appointment comes at a time when the Horn of Africa and Red Sea region continues to require strengthened diplomatic engagement to ensure security and safeguard key global trade routes.
