Aristote on building career in beauty, property

DAR ES SALAAM: IN a busy salon, a man stands behind a seated woman, parting her hair with care and precision. His hands move quickly but deliberately, shaping and styling as the mirror slowly reflects a transformation. For Aristote Kagombe, known simply as Aristote, this is where it all began.

He did not simply chase a dream; he built it. Starting with a comb, determination, and a clear sense of style, the Tanzanian stylist has grown from a salon beginner into one of East Africa’s most in-demand hair professionals, and is now expanding into real estate.

His client list includes well-known names such as Elizabeth Michael, Zari Hassan, Tanasha Donna, Wema Sepetu, Irene Uwoya and Shilole. However, his rise has been far from straightforward.

Without formal training, Aristote began by working in women’s salons, learning on the job despite scepticism. “I had to build myself from scratch,” he says. For two years, he saved his earnings with the aim of opening his own salon.

After achieving that goal, he identified another opportunity. Many of his clients struggled to find quality wigs and hairpieces. In response, he began sourcing wigs locally and selling them at his salon. The idea quickly gained traction.

To improve his offering, Aristote invested $3,000 of his savings to travel to China and Vietnam in search of better-quality products. This decision became a turning point. “Anyone who buys from me knows it’s authentic,” he says. “I don’t compromise on quality.”

Beyond styling, Aristote focuses on the client experience, aiming to ensure people leave feeling confident. His social media platforms highlight client transformations and reinforce his brand.

As demand for wigs in Tanzania has grown, Aristote has positioned himself as a reliable supplier. Clients now spend up to 10 million Tanzanian shillings on premium wigs, reflecting the trust he has built.

His journey has not been without challenges. Entering a female-dominated industry as a man brought criticism, but he remained focused. “Hair styling is art,” he says. “Creativity has no gender.” He has also maintained clear boundaries with high-profile clients, insisting on fairness and professionalism.

With his salon established, Aristote has expanded into real estate, reinvesting his income to grow his portfolio. He describes the sector as both demanding and rewarding.

Today, he owns several properties, travels internationally, and supports his children’s education. His work has also attracted attention from leading figures in the entertainment industry.

Aristote’s story reflects persistence, adaptability, and long-term planning. His message is straightforward: every profession deserves respect, and success can come from unexpected places.
