Laughing her way to the top, Asmah glorifies Tanzanian comedy

DAR ES SALAAM: WHEN the lights dim and anticipation fills the room, few performers command attention quite like Asmah Majed, popularly known by her stage name Asmaah Jamida. With sharp wit and natural charisma, she has become one of the most recognizable faces in Tanzania’s fast-growing stand-up comedy industry, transforming everyday life into laughter that resonates across audiences.

Her journey into comedy began modestly in 2019 while she was still a university student. At the time, Asmah served as a student government education minister, delivering speeches that often blended policy with humor.

“Back then, I used to sneak jokes into my speeches, and people loved it,” she recalls. “The reactions made me realise this was something I could pursue seriously.”

What started as a spontaneous addition to formal speeches soon evolved into a clear calling. Encouraged by the positive feedback she consistently received, Asmah began to see comedy not just as entertainment, but as a powerful tool for connection.

“I noticed how my jokes affected people it was powerful. That gave me courage,” she says.

However, carving a path in stand-up comedy proved challenging. While many of her peers pursued more conventional creative outlets such as music, acting, and dance, Asmah chose a less crowded but more uncertain route.

Her decision to focus on comedy helped her stand out in a competitive, talent-driven environment, but it also meant navigating an industry still finding its footing in Tanzania.

As a young woman in a male-dominated field, she faced additional scrutiny. “Some people would suggest I do something else.

Others came to shows just to look at me rather than listen to my jokes,” she says with a light laugh. Instead of discouraging her, these experiences strengthened her resolve. “It pushed me to prove that I belong on that stage.”

For Asmah, confidence remains the biggest barrier preventing more women from entering comedy. “If women can overcome fear and believe in themselves, we would see so many more talented female comedians,” she explains. She adds that confidence directly impacts performance, from delivery and timing to audience engagement.

Her comedic material is deeply rooted in real life. According to Asmah, about 80 percent of her content is drawn from everyday experiences, while the remaining 20 percent reflects her personal life. “Ordinary moments are funny. People connect with things they recognize,” she says, emphasizing relatability as the heart of her craft.

Asmah’s success mirrors the expanding opportunities for women in Tanzania’s entertainment industry. She actively encourages aspiring female comedians to step forward and claim their space. “There’s so much room for women here. They just need to take that first step,” she says.

Beyond the stage, her growing popularity has translated into financial success, with reports indicating she can earn up to five million Tanzanian shillings per performance. She has also ventured into entrepreneurship through her brand, Asma Staples, which complements her comedy career while offering engaging content to her audience.

Reflecting on her journey, Asmah credits perseverance and self-belief as key to her rise. Her message to young women is clear and direct: “Trust your talent, embrace challenges, and take action. Confidence is the most important stage you’ll ever step on.”

As Tanzania’s comedy scene continues to grow, Asmah Majed stands as both a pioneer and an inspiration proof that with courage and creativity, laughter can open doors to remarkable opportunities.
