MUHAS construction project beats targets

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Culture and Sports has expressed satisfaction with the pace of implementation of the College of Medicine construction project at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), noting that progress has exceeded contractual targets.
According to an implementation report under the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) project worth over 77bn/-, construction of students’ hostels has reached 82.5 per cent against the planned 76 per cent.
The laboratory building has attained 70.5 per cent completion compared to 68 per cent, while lecture halls stand at 70.5 per cent against a target of 65 per cent. Construction of the dining hall has reached 71.5 per cent, surpassing the expected 69 per cent.
Speaking shortly after inspecting the project sites, the Committee Chairperson, Ms Husna Sekiboko, commended the university for the impressive progress.
She said implementation in several areas ranges between 70 and 80 per cent, exceeding the contractual projection of about 65.5 per cent at this stage.
“We have witnessed many projects progressing ahead of schedule, which is commendable. This reflects strong supervision and accountability among implementers,” she said.
Ms Sekiboko said the committee is optimistic that, upon completion, the expanded infrastructure will help bridge the gap of health professionals in the country by increasing student enrolment capacity.

“There is still a challenge of a low doctor-to-patient ratio, so efforts to expand this university and increase the number of professionals will help address this problem,” she said.
The committee also commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for continued investment in strategic projects, including the provision of over 115bn/- for the expansion of the Mloganzila campus.
It noted that part of the funds, including support from development partners such as the World Bank, is a result of strengthened international cooperation.
The committee further applauded the Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Adolph Mkenda, institutional leaders and staff for their integrity and commitment in ensuring effective implementation of the projects.
Ms Sekiboko said sustaining such efforts across sectors would accelerate the country’s development agenda. Meanwhile, MUHAS Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Emmanuel Balandya, said the institution is implementing a long-term plan to transform the 3,800-hectare Mloganzila campus into a modern Academic Medical City.
“Within five years, this area will change significantly, and we have a master plan for utilisation of the entire land to establish more centres of excellence in addition to those already available,” he said.
