From courtroom dreams to business mentor: Baraka Michael’s mission to empower entrepreneurs

DAR ES SAALAM: AFTER graduating with a law degree and securing a job at a firm, Baraka Michael (pictured) appeared set to follow the traditional legal career path.
Instead, he made a bold decision that would change his life: he quit his job and launched his own company dedicated to helping entrepreneurs formalise and grow their businesses.
Today, Mr Michael is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Michael Business Hub, a business consulting agency that supports entrepreneurs and companies to start, formalise and expand their ventures.
Driven by big ambitions, he aims to help hundreds of businesses grow and reach more than 10 million young entrepreneurs over the next five years.
Through his consultancy, Mr Michael has assisted individuals and organisations both within and outside Africa, simplifying the process of starting businesses, registering them legally and successfully entering the market.
In an exclusive interview with the ‘Daily News’, he shared his journey, one marked by courage, bold decisions and a strong belief in the potential of young entrepreneurs.
Mr Michael’s journey did not begin easily, and success was far from guaranteed. Like many young people, he started with dreams, ideas and a determination to do something different.
Although he studied law, he gradually realised that the legal profession extends far beyond courtrooms.
“Many people believe that studying law simply means going to court,” he explained. “But the field is broad and includes areas such as business law, environmental law and children’s rights.”
His legal education, he said, helped him develop a broader perspective on how systems work, especially within the business environment.
Shortly after graduating, he secured employment at a company involved in facilitating business operations, including distributing electronic fiscal devices used by the Tanzania Revenue Authority.
Through that work, he began observing the challenges many entrepreneurs face.
“While working there, I realised something important,” he recalled.

“Many entrepreneurs had excellent business ideas, but they lacked proper guidance on how to start and manage their businesses. Some didn’t even know how to register them.”
Others lacked accurate information about licences and permits, while some struggled with marketing their products or attracting customers. These experiences sparked an idea of building a one-stop business support hub.
Mr Michael began asking himself a simple question: what if there was a place that could guide entrepreneurs through every stage of building a business?
A place that could help someone move from a simple idea to a legally registered company that successfully attracts customers.
That idea led him to establish Michael Business Hub, a consulting agency offering integrated support services for entrepreneurs. But the journey was far from smooth.
At first, he assumed that because he had knowledge and expertise, clients would quickly come to him.
Instead, he discovered an important truth about business: trust takes time to build.
“When a business owner entrusts someone with their company or business plans, they must have a very high level of trust in that person,” he said.
“Convincing people to trust me and follow my guidance was not easy.”

The experience taught him that business registration alone was not enough. Entrepreneurs also needed education and mentorship.
Today, his agency provides a range of services aimed at helping entrepreneurs succeed, including guidance on starting a business, business and company registration, assistance with licences and permits, marketing training and customer acquisition strategies and advice on building strong business systems.
Through these services, entrepreneurs receive step-bystep support in developing and growing their businesses.
Despite the challenges, Mr Michael vividly remembers the moment that confirmed he was on the right path.
It was the day he received his first major payment from a client for services he had personally developed.
“After completing the work and receiving the payment, I went home on a bodaboda,” he recalled with a smile.
“I remember feeling incredibly happy. At one point I even raised my hand in the air in excitement.” For him, that moment represented more than money.
It was proof that an idea that once existed only in his mind had become a real and profitable venture.
The power of personal branding and technology Mr Michael strongly believes that personal branding plays a crucial role in business success. According to him, positioning oneself as an expert can significantly shorten the path to recognition and opportunity.
Rather than waiting years to build a reputation, he encourages young professionals to leverage social media and digital platforms to build trust and reach wider audiences.
“Today someone can gain clients from different parts of the country or even abroad, without meeting them face to face,” he said.
Technology, he added, has transformed the way businesses operate. In the past, entrepreneurs needed physical shops in busy locations to attract customers.
Today, digital platforms allow entrepreneurs to reach large markets even while working from home. For young people aspiring to start businesses, Mr Michael offers simple but powerful advice: start where you are with what you have.
He believes many young people delay their ambitions while waiting for large capital or perfect conditions. However, he says the perfect moment rarely exists.
“Instead of waiting indefinitely, take small steps and learn through action,” he advised. Fear of failure, he added, is another barrier many young people must overcome.
Mr Michael plans to develop a digital platform where people can learn everything about business in one place. The platform will provide training in entrepreneurship, marketing, customer acquisition and business growth.
His vision is to help millions of Swahili-speaking entrepreneurs gain the knowledge needed to succeed in business.
For many young people searching for opportunities through entrepreneurship, his story serves as a reminder that great success often begins with a single bold step.
“There is no one responsible for your life,” he said. “Your life belongs to you. Choose something you truly believe can transform your future and pursue it with full commitment. Stay consistent and success
