IAEA sees Tanzanian preps to invest in nuclear power generation

DODOMA: TANZANIA has intensified preparations for investment in nuclear power generation as part of its long-term energy strategy, with the government completing key preliminary requirements, including a detailed implementation roadmap.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba made the statement at a meeting between the Ministry and a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mtumba, Dodoma.
During the meeting, the minister said that the country has made notable progress towards readiness for nuclear power development, mentioning the completion of a six-and-a-half-year implementation roadmap that outlines critical milestones for the project.

Elaborating, he said that the roadmap places strong emphasis on capacity building and public awareness, with plans to train experts from various institutions.
Additionally, he said that the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has already established a dedicated unit to oversee nuclear power generation, while the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) has been proposed as a key institution for specialised training.
According to information from the IAEA website, nuclear energy provides access to clean, reliable, and affordable electricity, accounting for around 9 percent of global electricity and 25 percent of all low-carbon electricity without emitting greenhouse gases at the point of generation.
