PM reassures Tanzanians of strong food reserves

DODOMA: PRIME Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has assured Tanzanians that the country has a sufficient food reserve of over 250,000 tonnes, despite unsatisfactory rainfall in some regions.

He explained that while the national food reserve requirement is 150,000 tonnes, the country currently holds more than 400,000 tonnes in storage, ensuring stability and food security.

However, he cautioned citizens, particularly in areas experiencing scattered and low rainfall, to focus on planting crops that can withstand dry conditions.

He also urged people to manage their food stocks wisely to maintain adequate reserves.

“When I recently met with Regional Commissioners, I asked them to continue guiding Tanzanians in areas with erratic rainfall on the types of crops suitable for such conditions.

It is also important for citizens to use food responsibly to ensure sufficient reserves are maintained,” the Prime Minister said.

Dr Nchemba further said that there is no need for concern over food shortages during Ramadan and Lent, nor should there be worries about price hikes leading to inflation.

He was responding to a question from Ms Nancy Nyalusi (Special Seats–CCM), who asked about the government’s plans to ensure national food sufficiency and control inflation during Ramadan and Lent, particularly in light of the recent rainfall deficits.
