Geita residents benefit from free medical camp

GEITA: MORE than 720 residents of Geita District have benefited from a free medical screening and healthcare services programme conducted at Lwamugasa and Nyarugusu wards, sponsored by Mwamba Mining Company.
The four-day medical outreach, held from January 21 to 24, 2025, at Buziba Village, provided a wide range of free health services to the beneficiaries.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the company’s Doctor Rashid Charles, said nine eye patients underwent surgery, while 17 patients diagnosed with tumours have been scheduled for surgical procedures. He added that the services offered included eye care, oral and dental services, maternal and child healthcare, internal medicine, and radiology examinations.
“All services were provided free of charge, with Mwamba Mining fully funding the programme and engaging specialist doctors from various institutions, including Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC),” Dr Rashid said.
Mwamba Mining Community Relations Manager, Mr Meshack Ezekiel, said the medical camp attended to an average of 200 patients per day, noting that the initiative aimed to strengthen relations with the local community while addressing prevalent health challenges.

He added that the programme also featured Red Cross and first aid training, aimed at enhancing emergencypreparedness both within the community and at the mine.
Acting Red Cross Coordinator for Mwanza Region, Dr Hamidu Ibrahimu, said the training involved 50 participants and was designed to improve workplace safety, particularly in mining areas.
Mwamba Mining Chief Executive Officer, Mr Edward Cornew, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to community development through active participation in social and health initiatives.
Geita District Council Health Secretary, Mr Kasisi Mtwale, commended the company for supporting healthcare delivery and urged it to develop a sustainable strategy, including the construction of a dispensary or health centre, as part of its corporate social responsibility.
