Mwinyi commits to sports growth

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President, Hussein Mwinyi has announced that his government will construct a new stadium and continue upgrading existing facilities to transform the islands into a premier destination for regional and international competitions.

Speaking during eve of Zanzibar Revolution 62 anniversary on Sunday, the President stressed that these efforts would not only elevate the sports sector but also attract an influx of tourists and visitors to the island.

Addressing the nation, President Mwinyi said plans for the ongoing construction of 17 sports fields across Unguja and Pemba that will expand the island’s capacity to host major sporting events.

Several projects, including the New Amaan Complex, Gombani, Mao Zedong Stadium and Maisara sports facilities, are completed, and the government is also pressing ahead with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art stadium in Fumba, intended to host African Cup of Nations (AFCON) matches.

“Our commitment to building modern sports infrastructure is unwavering. With the development of our sports infrastructure, Zanzibar will become a hub for both sports and cultural tourism.”

“These investments will create the necessary environment to host regional and international sporting events, which in turn will boost tourism and create new opportunities for our youth,” President Mwinyi noted.

The government’s strategy is to use sports as a catalyst for wider economic growth.

According to the President, the new facilities will help Zanzibar to not only attract major international sports competitions but also cultivate local talent, ensuring that the island remains at the forefront of both tourism and sport.

“We have already seen the benefits of investing in sports infrastructure as several Mainland Premier League clubs have chosen Zanzibar as the venue for some of their key international matches, and this is just the beginning,” the President continued.

“By continuing to build world-class sports facilities, we will position Zanzibar as a prime destination for global events, festivals and sports tourism.”

The President also emphasised that this push for enhanced sports facilities is part of a broader strategy to diversify Zanzibar’s tourism offerings, which include cultural festivals, historical sites and natural attractions.

He pointed to events such as the International Swahili Conference and music festivals, which have already contributed to an increase in international visitors.
