DC calls for financial discipline in use of council loans

GEITA: THE Bukombe District Commissioner in Geita Region, Mr Pasikasi Mulagiri has urged beneficiaries of interest-free council loans to observe financial discipline to ensure the funds generate sustainable economic benefits.
Mr Mulagiri made the call recently during a ceremony to hand over 208m/- in interest-free loans to 24 groups of women, youth and people with disabilities.
He said the primary objective of the programme is to economically empower citizens by enabling them to expand their capital, increase income and improve livelihoods at both individual and community levels.
Mr Mulagiri noted that strict adherence to financial discipline would ensure positive outcomes, including timely loan repayment, sustainability of projects and continuous growth of capital and profits.
He stressed that the loans are not handouts but part of a long-term government initiative aimed at lifting citizens out of poverty through economic empowerment.
“If you repay the loan on time, you qualify for another loan of a higher amount,” Mr Mulagiri said.

Speaking at the event, Bukombe District Council Executive Director, Ms Adelina Mfikwa, said the council has put in place strict measures to ensure that only eligible groups benefit from the loans.
Ms Mfikwa added that monitoring is ongoing to ensure groups that previously received loans repay them on time, thereby creating opportunities for more beneficiaries to access the funds.
Meanwhile, Bukombe District Council Chairperson, Mr Erick Kagoma, said financial discipline begins with ensuring that projects implemented by the groups reflect the realities outlined in their approved project proposals.
He said that the government’s goal is to achieve an economic transformation through an inclusive economy that enables all citizens to benefit directly from national resources.
