Digital shift elevates BRELA
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA) has strengthened its role as the country’s main gateway for business operations after achievements driven by digital transformation and increased efficiency in business registration in the last five years.
The BRELA Chief Executive Officer, Godfrey Nyaisa, said that more than 90 per cent of the agency’s operations are now conducted digitally, a shift that has significantly improved service delivery and reduced processing time for clients.
“BRELA’s systems are now integrated with key government institutions, including the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and the National Identification Authority (NIDA), enabling faster and more seamless access to essential business services,” said Mr Nyaisa told the Minister for Industry and Trade Ms Judith Kapinga when she visited the agency in Dar recently.
He said that between July 2020 and this June, BRELA registered and issued licenses for 73,550 companies, 133,350 business names, 15,745 trademarks and service marks, 358 patent applications, 1,279 industrial licenses, and 82,729 Class A business licenses.
Additionally, the agency continues to strengthen staff capacity and workplace discipline to support the growing demand for services.
Minister Kapinga highlighted BRELA’s role as the country’s main business gateway, given its mandate to handle business registration and licensing.
However, she urged BRELA to further improve operational efficiency and deliver services with professionalism, speed and accountability.
Ms Kapinga highlighted that the ultimate goal is to create a business-friendly environment, promote sustainable industrial growth, and ensure seamless service delivery to traders, investors, and consumers.

The Minister also underscored the importance of harmonised digital systems across all ministry agencies.
She said that access to accurate trade, market, and industrial information should be centralised so that anyone seeking data receives consistent and verified information.
According to Minister Kapinga, the growing pace of business registration and licensing not only supports job creation but also broadens the national tax base and drives industrial development.
The government reiterated its commitment to investing in technology and enhancing the ease of doing business to position Tanzania as a leading regional investment hub.
