Tanzania pushes for faster delivery of energy targets

DODOMA: ENERGY Minister, Deogratius Ndejembi, has directed his ministry staff to accelerate implementation of government priorities, stressing that meeting Tanzania’s target of generating 8,000 megawatts by 2030 will require renewed commitment and strong teamwork across the sector.

Addressing ministry’s employees in Dodoma, soon after assuming office, Mr Ndejembi underscored that civil servants are the driving force behind the government’s ambitions in the energy sector.

He urged technical teams to study and align their work with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s guidance, noting that her first 100 days in office outlined clear benchmarks for assessing progress.

“The President has laid down the direction. As your leaders, we are counting on your cooperation to deliver the priorities she has set. In this sector, we must begin by running—not walking,” he said.

Ndejembi emphasised that the ministry’s performance will play a decisive role in the government’s broader development agenda, especially as electricity access and generation remain at the centre of Tanzania’s industrialisation efforts.

Deputy Minister Salome Makamba reinforced the message, urging staff to work closely with the leadership as the country pushes ahead with major power projects.

She noted that Tanzania’s current installed capacity stands at approximately 4,000 megawatts, saying the next phase will focus on completing ongoing investments and diversifying power sources.

“We have already achieved significant milestones. Our responsibility now is to finalise existing projects and integrate additional generation sources so we can reach 8,000 megawatts by 2030,” she said.

Permanent Secretary Felchesmi Mramba called for stronger coordination across departments and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to meeting President Samia’s targets.

The push for accelerated delivery comes as Tanzania intensifies efforts to expand access to reliable and affordable electricity, a key foundation for economic transformation, industrial growth and social development.
