Govt: Go for balanced diet to improve health, lifespan

DODOMA: THE government has reminded citizens to consume a diverse range of locally available foods to improve their health and overall nutritional status as the country marks the National Nutrition Week.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Health on Monday, the government underscored that proper nutrition is fundamental to disease prevention, cognitive development and the creation of a strong, productive workforce capable of contributing effectively to national socio-economic growth.

The ministry urged households to make wider use of foods readily found within their communities—particularly vegetables, fruits, animal-source foods and fortified products—emphasising that these remain essential for improving family health and preventing nutrition-related illnesses.

“For the year 2025, these commemorations are held in all regions of Mainland Tanzania from November 17 to 21, 2025, with the national event taking place in Ruvuma Region,” read part of the statement.

National Nutrition Week is traditionally observed on October 29 or 30 each year to raise public awareness of proper nutrition and the social and economic consequences of malnutrition.

This year’s theme, “Your Health Is Your Capital: Mind What You Eat,” highlights the central role of healthy eating in building a resilient and economically productive population.

According to the ministry, poor nutrition continues to fuel high levels of stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and a growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Health experts attribute the rise in diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and stroke to unhealthy dietary habits combined with limited physical activity.

The statement further emphasised the importance of good nutrition during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, a critical period that shapes future physical growth, brain development and overall wellbeing.

The government said it is intensifying efforts to reduce stunting among children under five through communitybased education, enhanced child health services and the expansion of nutrition interventions nationwide.

Ongoing initiatives include strengthened coordination of regional and district nutrition committees, the growth of school feeding programmes and increased promotion of food fortification to ensure households access essential vitamins and minerals.

During this year’s commemorations, regions are expected to conduct community outreach activities, nutrition screenings, cooking demonstrations, exhibitions and education sessions aimed at promoting healthier eating habits using readily available local foods.

Health workers will also provide counselling and raise awareness of the link between good nutrition and long-term wellbeing.

The ministry encouraged families to participate in activities organised in their respective regions, noting that the path to better nutrition begins at home.
