Go for early NCD detection, public advised

DODOMA: THE Coordinator for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Dodoma Region, Dr Missana Yango, has appealed to city residents to turn up for the ongoing free health screening and education campaign, noting that regular checkups are vital in identifying health risks early and ensuring timely treatment.

Speaking to journalists at Nyerere Square, where the screening week is being observed, Dr Yango said the exercise aims to raise awareness and promote early detection of life-threatening conditions among city residents.

He said the services, which are being offered at no cost, include screening for high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, heart diseases, as well as nutrition and healthy lifestyle education.

“Our goal is to reach as many people as possible so they can understand their health status and take early preventive measures before these diseases become chronic. All services provided here are completely free, and we encourage everyone to come forward,” he said.

Dr Yango added that the campaign is part of the government’s ongoing efforts through the Ministry of Health and the Office of the Dodoma City Medical Officer to combat the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases, which continue to increase due to changes in lifestyle.

“The government’s goal is to ensure that citizens remain healthy. The number of non-communicable diseases is rising rapidly, so it is important for everyone to take early preventive action,” he stressed.

One of the beneficiaries, Tumaini Shauri, a resident of Nzuguni, commended the government for bringing free health services closer to the people, noting that the initiative has enabled many to understand their health conditions and receive professional advice.

“I’m very grateful to the government for this initiative. When I heard the announcement, I decided to come and get tested for all the conditions mentioned.

I’ve received the tests and medical guidance, and I encourage my fellow citizens to take part since the services are free,” said Shauri.

The three-day screening exercise, which also includes blood donation and public health education sessions, is expected to conclude today, November 14, 2025.
