Tanzania intensifies protection of Mgori Reserve against illegal logging

SINGIDA: PROTECTION of the Mgori Forest Reserve in Singida Region will be strengthened following the announcement by the Commissioner for Conservation at the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), Professor Dos Santos Silayo, of a plan to increase the number of forest rangers, deploy modern security equipment, and begin construction of a ranger post in Pohama Village.
Professor Silayo made the commitment during a special meeting of the Singida District Security and Defense Committee, held at the office of District Commissioner Godwin Gondwe, aimed at discussing strategies to enhance the protection and conservation of the Mgori Forest.
The forest, which is among the country’s key reserves, has been facing challenges including wildfires, illegal logging, and encroachment, all of which undermine government efforts to protect forest resources.

Speaking during the meeting, DC Gondwe emphasized the importance of community-based conservation, suggesting joint patrols involving TFS officers, the Police Force, and residents of villages surrounding the forest. He also called for improved security infrastructure in the Pohama area, located on the border with Hanang District.
Responding to the discussion points, Professor Silayo said TFS is committed to increasing manpower and using modern equipment to curb forest destruction and safeguard natural resources for the benefit of both present and future generations.

“We will deploy enough rangers, provide security equipment, and begin construction of a ranger post in Pohama to ensure that the protection of the Mgori Forest is sustainable and long-lasting,” he said.
The Commissioner also thanked the District Security and Defense Committee for their collaboration in managing forest and beekeeping reserves, noting that collective efforts are key to successful conservation.
Concluding the meeting, DC Gondwe commended Professor Silayo for his quick response and results-oriented leadership in the conservation sector.

“We value the close cooperation between TFS and local government authorities. The Mgori Forest is a national heritage that must be protected with all our strength,” said the District Commissioner.
