Coast set to solidify industry hub role

COAST REGION: COAST Region is set to cement its position as the country’s industrial hub, with factories projected to double to 3,362 over the next 25 years. Its strategic location near major seaports, coupled with critical infrastructure projects, is set to make the region a hub for industrial growth in the country.

Key infrastructure developments are underpinning this expansion. The natural gas pipeline to Chalinze ensures a reliable energy supply, while the electric-driven Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) enhances connectivity between inland markets and seaports.

Others are the Kwala Dry Port facilitates efficient cargo handling, reducing logistics costs for manufacturers. Additionally, the ongoing expansion of Bagamoyo Port promises to transform the Coast Region into a major trade gateway, attracting both domestic and foreign investors.

The Coast Regional Commissioner, Mr Abubakar Kunenge, said the region’s steady progress toward its goal is evident in the rising number of industries, which have grown from 1,381 in 2022 to 1,681 to date.

“Over this period, we have learned what investors need for their projects and we are doing our best to meet those requirements,” said Mr Kunenge recently during a leadership training for Chalinze Council leaders in Kibaha.

Additionally, the region already has other supporting infrastructure like electricity supply increased from 118 to 140 megawatts. These project improvements will not only boost industrial output but also generate thousands of jobs, reinforcing the region’s role as a cornerstone of economic growth.

The regional data show that the currently improvement has created 21,000 direct and 60,000 indirect jobs, while exposing locals to modern manufacturing technologies.

“These projects will significantly strengthen the industrial sector in the region, supporting the establishment of more industries. The government’s goal is not only to double the number of industries but also to help investors produce high-quality goods in a friendly working environment,” he said.

Mr Kunenge added that several industries in Mkuranga District are using gas for manufacturing, and extending the gas pipeline to Chalinze will mark a major breakthrough for the sector.

Chalinze District Executive Director Ramadhan Possi said that the council allocated 300 plots for industrial projects. He also noted that the district rich in construction materials such as gravel and pebbles, is making significant strides in expanding its industrial capacity.

With these strategic infrastructure projects and supportive policies, he said the region is poised to maintain its status as a key driver of the country’s industrial growth, attracting investment and creating employment opportunities across the region.
