African youth demand a stronger voice in shaping environmental policies

DAR ES SALAAM: YOUTH representatives from across Africa have called for greater inclusion in climate decision-making processes, urging governments and global actors to give young people a stronger voice in shaping environmental policies.

Speaking during the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) Pre-COP Meeting held in Dar es Salaam, the youth stressed the need for unity and collaboration in addressing the continent’s climate challenges.

The Director of Civil Society Organisations, Sara Pima, said youth participation in high-level discussions is key to bringing fresh ideas and innovative solutions to the table.

“When young people are part of decision-making platforms, they gain accountability, strengthen public awareness, and contribute to protecting both the current and future generations,” she said.

On his part, the Presidential Advisor on Environment and Climate Change, Dr Richard Uyungi, underscored that youth are among the most affected by climate change impacts and must therefore be given meaningful space to contribute to planning and implementation of environmental policies.

“Empowering youth participation is not just a necessity but a commitment to securing Africa’s sustainable future,” he said.

Representing the youth, Ibrahim Hailillahi Usman from Ghana, said the meeting provided an opportunity to better understand the issues affecting the continent and the role of young Africans in driving solutions.

“I believe this will give us a clear picture of the challenges facing our continent and where young people come in. We don’t want one group to say A and another to say B we want a unified voice,” he said.

Similarly, Abby Chebet from Kenya, emphasized the importance of youth unity and cross-border cooperation in tackling the climate crisis and promoting sustainable development.

The AGN Pre-COP Meeting drew together climate experts, government officials, and youth leaders from various African nations to align positions ahead of the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP).
