COSTECH urges media to embrace scientific reporting

DAR ES SALAAM: MEDIA Outlets in Tanzania have been called upon to prioritize science reporting as a vital tool for shaping public understanding, influencing policy, and accelerating sustainable development.
Speaking at the 2025 Excellence in Science Journalism Awards held in Dar es Salaam, the Chairperson of the Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), Mr John Kondoro, emphasized the critical role of science journalism in translating complex scientific research into relatable narratives that resonate with the public.
“Science journalism is not just about reporting facts it’s about connecting science to people’s everyday lives,” said Mr Kondoro. “We need journalists who can help the public see how science drives innovation, informs policy, and improves livelihoods.”
Mr Kondoro commended the award winners for their outstanding contributions in making science accessible and relevant to society. He also encouraged journalists to deepen their understanding of data science and statistics to better inform the public with accuracy and clarity.
“A strong foundation in data and scientific literacy empowers journalists to tell stories which can shape the future,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, Dr Amos Nungu, Director General of COSTECH, underscored the need to demystify scientific knowledge and communicate it in ways that are practical and easy to understand.
“Scientific knowledge has no impact if it remains locked in laboratories and academic journals. Journalists play a crucial role in turning research into real-world solutions by translating it for policymakers and everyday citizens,” he said.
He noted that effective science communication is not a luxury, it is a necessity for informed decision-making and inclusive development.
Representing the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB Africa), Mr David Tarus expressed his appreciation for the growing collaboration between scientists and the media.
“I’m proud to see a strong and growing bond between the scientific community and journalists,” said Mr Tarus. “This partnership is vital in making science more visible, more trusted, and more impactful.”
