TBS urges engineers to enforce standards in feasibility studies

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA Bureau of Standards (TBS) has called on engineers to ensure the consistent application of local standards in both feasibility studies and construction projects, stressing their critical role in upholding structural integrity, public safety and regulatory compliance.
This was highlighted by TBS Standards Manager, Eng Yona Afrika in Dar es Salaam during the 22nd Commemoration of Tanzania Engineers Day.
He said the Bureau’s participation aimed mainly to raise awareness on the importance of using certified products that meet safety and quality standards verified by TBS laboratories.

“We urge engineers to use only products tested and certified by TBS in their work. Our advanced laboratories ensure these products meet the required quality standards,” he said.
Engineer Yona noted that TBS operates three key laboratories focused on testing engineering and construction materials, and is also responsible for calibrating testing equipment to ensure accurate, standards-aligned results.
He emphasised the shift from international to locally developed standards—created in collaboration with stakeholders which now serve as the official benchmarks for all national projects.
Mr Yona reaffirmed TBS’s readiness to provide technical support, urging engineers to use certified products and adhere to Tanzanian standards to ensure safety and quality in development projects.
